Still photography captures a single moment. Film allows a portrait to unfold through time.
My films extend my investigation of portraiture beyond the still image, using movement, sound, silence, and narrative to explore how people inhabit places and how places shape the people within them.
Aux: In the 1700s a young French girl named Adrienne disguised herself as a cabin boy named Petit Jean to follow her lover to the New World. She died atop the mountain that now bears her name, and legend says her spirit traveled to the Ozarks with the exhibition team, fusing with the mossy rocks to become Aux Ox, a mythical figure locals honor with offerings of food and love stories.
:nôrˈmalədē: /nôrˈmalədē/. Set in the hills of the Ozarks during COVID 19, this film is a poetic exploration of fear, innocence, imagination, and isolation. During lockdown, I found myself stuck on a mountain with my children. I loved being with them, caring for them, and protecting them, but the constant closeness also pushed me to my limits. The film grew out of that tension, the simultaneous beauty and strain of sharing a small world together. Like much of my work, /nôrˈmalədē/ is moody, slow moving, and without dialogue. Through imagery, atmosphere, and gesture, it reflects the emotional landscape of that time, when imagination became both an escape and a survival tool. Music by @cellophanegarden.
